GO LOOK GO SEE GO DO - THIS IS A MUUUST !

funny, i've never had a show that i didn't share piece by piece on the internet prior to the event. i've even had previews/pre-sales in town for shows that are just out of town. there is a pride in being secretive about this work especially because i know its all going to print. i don't do prints. i'm breaking a personal rule so how can pride not play a hand this time around ? however as much as i am not sharing visually i am talking about content openly with everyone, i can't hide my loves but i can kill darlings like an adult. speaking of print - boy this card thing is a crossover and a half for me, but i love the idea so much that it's a burden. i want people to get what they want (lord lord lord), but i want what i want. i like things to be done well and i've never tried a duo or tri-tone image for posterity before. it's got challenging limitations and my time has once again run out on me like it will for us all some day very soon. My daughter told me about the discovery of a new habitable planet and it has me so stunned with optimism and futurism i can hardly speak.

earlier this year after a long and very confusing time of illness i got a job storyboarding - "but then suddenly" - due to a conflict of mysterious nature i was released. i was so upset, literally homeless and still recovering from an illness which was brought on by antibiotics ... i don't suggest taking antibiotics at all - try PRObiotics instead and save yourself a bundle of cash and possibly your life. at any rate, i'm at a new job (just a week after being cut from the old place which was a sweatshop promising to deliver something that i just don't think that they are capable of within a time window that is completely unrealistic) ... and i'm totally blessed with this new situation - like a ray of sunshine every day!!! i LOVE the work, the people, the office, the ideas flowing, the overtime, the new life i lead. i promise once this push is out (early Oct) i'll be back sharing more of myself here regularly. i have another painting finished... but work (YES! WOOORK!) has me so busy i can't scan it! .... so here are some doodles to keep your appetite whetted ...

The Scorpion and the Frog

One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river.
The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn't see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.

Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.

"Hellooo Mr. Frog!" called the scorpion across the water, "Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?"

"Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the frog hesitantly.

"Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!"

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!"

"This is true," agreed the scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!"

"Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said the frog.

"Ahh...," crooned the scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog's back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog's soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

"You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back.

"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

I'm surprised you'd fire a guy who was out of work for so long after being out of work yourself for 2 years or so (somewhat revealing). I'm surprised that you would try to leave your comment on my blog twice (also rather telling), like i wouldn't opt to administer what's permissible here on my page. Surprising also that it says on your Linked page that you enjoy painting - case in point. SURPRISE! I haven't seen ONE painting authored by your hand. HA HA HACK! (see above Abraham Lincoln quote) ... would i WANT to see one of your "original paintings"? sure ! But hey, i'm surprised by a LOT of things about you. Just goes to show, you NEVER know, do you. Mostly i am surprised that all the busy buzzing you do carries such weight with some others for now....but this is all too much a waste of energy over two week old dirty laundry. We're big enough to be bygones right? Not like i had a choice to consider in this matter, and now, neither do you. Good luck keeping that train on track, and i mean this in all earnestness. That show deserves the best. If i wanted to smack talk you my good man, you'd know it. I could have filed a grievance with MPSC. I simply was talking about animation and what i KNOW about it. This is a very small town and a smaller industry. And by the way - downshots aren't bad, they just cost money. Animation is NOT a sitcom. If you were hired before i was, i wouldn't have ever BEEN hired, this we both know. And be reassured that i already have more work so that i can take care of myself, support my family, and live a full life as a good person. Go create another anonymous post someplace, but try to remember that there is more to a living than networking, meeting, and debating. There is good old fashioned doing for the pleasure of it. Hard work is salve and moreover it's a GREAT education. We ALL have lots to learn no matter what we earn. There is a reason "Horrible Bosses" is in theaters, it's something that we can all RELATE to by our own personal experience. My dismissal was a blessing in disguise and the EP knew this when you had your little moment play out before you! My work speaks loud and clearly for itself because i LOVE what i do. - take fish pills take fish pills take fish pills .... "living the dream" ? - more like "living the commercial"

This is Sara - everyone who's been to a workshop has drawn her - simple? No, but stunning.

Twenty five minute poses go against everything an animator "is" or is supposed to master for the sake of his craft - or does it? what is his craft? life giver. How lifelike something can become depends what specific gifts the invoker has to bestow upon his creation (see Young Frankenstein). But, look in any technical school of animated film making and they want you to capture in line and tone on paper the essence of that which is before you, in all of it's fleeting glory, and they want you to do it as fast as you can. To be animated is to be living, sadly animation has by nature become systemized monetized and corporatized long ago - it's life drawn from it. Expression sheets are not enough to make us believe whole heartedly in a personality and have us shedding tears over a figment's plight projected on screen. Twenty five minutes on a drawing is about as long as meditation sitting give or take a few minutes and i would debate that those kinds of practices and their invaluable yield are nearly forgotten today. Ask any animator - ask the BEST animator you know to draw the face of someone you both know and to then take it to them. Are they up to it? When was the last time you attempted to expose something like a hand made photograph to the world for the experience you would gain in doing so? Worth a THOUSAND WORDS! Why aren't you trying things you haven't? Perhaps that's the reason you're not adding skillsets to your market value and are growing more and more stagnant in yesterday's dead cold 1/3 union scale economy. Perhaps you should consider the value of grading forms regularly from life. Perhaps ...it's FUN!

But you have to understand that YouTube Facebook Netflix Playstation Nintendo and all that other crud you gobble up unendingly has given you to impatience - like 1 - 2 -5 minute poses in a lifedrawing workshop. Rome wasn't built in twenty five minutes. It take 10 months for a fetus to become an infant. Grow yourself, benefit from discipline, we all can!

If and when you tie yourself to enduring the hard exercises associated with popular antiquated practice you'll find the liberty that much more readily on hand to you, like when you go straight ahead with black ink. For things to change for you, YOU have to change. Now more than ever you can kiss that boss adios and start your own revolution but you have to get off of your duffer and beat nonstop

Don't be fooled. Animators are storytellers, like cavepainters, actors, the greatest authors. If you settle for less it's on YOU and nobody else, so shut your whimpering burgerhole and shake off the myths you've financed in yesterday's educational system and become one of today's new legends by living from one moment to the next moment. Be your newest inspiration and be open to change but make sure that you stick - don't quit. Tracking your progress will let you know that you are indeed on your way!

last friday i lost a job. on thursday i had a director schooling me about what is and what is not "working" in storyboarding - here are some "direct" (ha) quotes...

"downshots are bad" - "never have a character's back to camera" - "why would you have three closeups in a row? ... closeups are for detail " - and my favorite one of all - "animation is like a sitcom" ... all of these are incredible statements to my mind and standing by not answering the man as he critiqued my work was like a front row seat at a circus from 1970's Filmation school of film making.

far be it from me to say what is and what is not the end all be all in animation, especially TV, but i can tell you that i know what i like in a word : "intimacy" - or to use another "intensity" - yet another "specificity" - anything that engages the audience. i won't say that i don't know how to do that. i have social graces based on my life's experience and i am not a dim man with calves like twenty pound turkeys. i have Saved the Cat and know the Power of Film.

i am determined to learn at the VERY least one thing every day i live, and i would think that everyone would find that idea not only something that is acceptable but something that you would pursue out of passion for life. systemizing animation especially on an action show for the teen crossover market is like offering a free lobotomy with each viewing and the last people who should be directing a project like that are those pursuant to the status quo who masquerade as animation insiders. you know who you are, and i certainly know who i am and what i am capable of with regard to EVERY HOUR OF THE LIVE LONG DAY! what's in a name? your artistic reputation ! the shows reputation comes first - anyone who can't just get on the side of the work doesn't deserve a job at all. so much entitlement with the word "director" - too much lording, pointing critiquing and not enough down and doing by those in positions of (false) power. - makes me feel bad for THEM when they exhibit so much puffery and posturing over what is SUPPOSED to be a GAG factory - for LAUGHS - KID STUFF! - if only they could get a load of themselves.

...and with this i'd like to suggest that FLASH has made cartoons colorforms - not the highest watermark of a very mondern form of potential art.

i suppose this question has to be asked. "Where have you been Miles?"

i've had a presence on the internet in so many forms since before 2000. why drop out now? why did i only blog here once in 2010 and what have i been doing in the meantime???

i'm glad you're here asking

1 in 2008 i sadly got divorced. it sucked, i'm over it - HA ? - then my X got sick (C) and it was horrid - but she's better thank goodness! i love that woman - mother of my beautiful child!
2 then i went surfing every single day for 2 years straight
3 then i got involved with a very tricky and very good friend - we fell in love. we read every morning, made breakfast in the morning lunch at noon and dinners every night. for 2 years we did what humans do best - love... however i grew to feel poorly and began to suspect it was the building we occupied = MOLD and this became a rather large disagreement between us and i was completely unstable mentally and physically - i really thought it was my turn and that my number was UP! even now though i am sure that my number is probably NOT up i am still fighting to recover and it's been SO not fun. when is being sick ever fun?

given all that i have been through and done in the last few years - including develop a love of the written word i'm gaining all kinds of new and very sober perspective and improving my life in every way i know how. i think medical marijuana is the devil. i can't drink alcohol or caffeine, can't smoke any dope (which i have to admit was my drug of choice), no sugar, no starch, no dairy - you get the idea. i'm 10lbs lighter and 10 times more the man i was prior to all of this going down. i've taken to writing in my journal daily, writing in my novel daily as well, meditating twice a day and exercising to maintain my sanity. the good news is it's working, and the best part of the good news is that i am becoming what i always knew i could be, a different kind of artist. one that is connected with whatever i want to know and to be. i am more open minded about everything, especially relationships!

so why the sudden revitalizing of the blog you might be wondering, especially when there is twitter and facebook. well - it just so happens that i am going to use ALL of these platforms to correspond and to firm up my network relations base. i want to do more commissions, interact with my customers and make them my friends and visa versa. you see in this modern time it seems that every corporation is at odds with humanity, they could care less about us, our families, our bills, our well being. they see us as numbers, and i see us as ONE. but here we are as individuals at the mercy of the machine - or are we? i've heard too many stories about how many people have lost their job their home their livelihoods because the USA is going papier-mâché. we are selling souls of our own kind down a hot filthy brown river. i think brands are over, so i am stepping up as an individual with interest in my own well being and in the process taking an interest in the very individuals who help to make my life COMPLETE - the very least we can do for one another is to interact one to one. the corporate cult creme of the crop can't stop us.

so look for me here. i'll post doodles, books of interest, clips of video to let you know how everything is in my life from day to day. i'm writing MANY many things, authoring in new software to eventually get my own "enhanced" (thanks apple) interactive children's ebooks authored and up for sale - planning a gallery exhibit and looking to help out with animated properties ranging from online tidbits to full length features. better to be busy working ones ass off than to sit and fret about the world. rest is for the dead, though, i'm feeling a bit Rip Van Winkle after all of this heavy life stuff. i am WIDE open to everything new and newsworthy and all that is change. i never really took "Art" seriously ... at all. i figured it was one of those things that came naturally and i was far too cavalier and casual about it, but from now on i WILL be doing little perky promos that will have all my typical quirks thrown in and it will ONLY be available here. i'm back, tell your friends. everything i do will be hand made ltd ed - screw flooding the markets and to hell with print magazine ads! save the paper, save the planet! if you have a question hit me here tiburciovasquez@mac.com - peace !

happy new year!... or is it the end? this is it, good/bad it's the end of something. looking back is childishness and the squandering of time in the selfish garden of regret. you think you have it bad. what's bad? what is really super bad? what's bad as...bad ass? HOW BAD ?

in a movie, kermit the frog sang "it's not easy being green" - that music is the most relevant ecological answer to our crisis in a way Jim H could never have foreseen, not ever. has anyone told you that you look green lately? as Americans we have to wrap our lives into loving this greener than thou philosophy to continue our traditional heritage's global lineage and whole melting pot spiel that we agreed to when we hooked up this rock for some magic beads off some local mucky-mucks. we need to do it MOST convincingly and in a big huge global way right now. the 2020s are just around the sun and moon of near-morrow for our kids. get 1000X less n go forward and get "green"... talk green be mean and live lean locally. do and speak with your act. get with the program with the people in mind or get lost!

the reason behind animation

given all of the interest in animation, computer animated features and television shows, as well as animated effects in live action movies i thought sharing a simple observation about the medium's origin might shed some light for those involved in the process of production that feel as though they're in the dark about where most creators are coming from with their ideas. i mean to say that this is a post for those who consider themselves experts on animation but who are not personally actually involved in the daily process in a hands on manner from conception to production. FIRST OFF, if you don't actually MAKE animation - if you don't DO it... shut your mouth, stop publishing your blog and cancel next year's comic con panel discussion immediately. you have no business talking about it at all good or bad because frankly you wouldn't know the difference between what's good and great so how would you know the difference between ok and pure horse pucky? just because you make your living producing cartoons doesn't make you the barometer for todays imaginative entertainment culture. in an effort to make that money back you're going to play it safe - split the difference and knock off an old cash cow, and you'd most likely overlook Sponge Bob if it were pitched today. you homogenize dreams. you sell guns to babies. i am saddened by all of the market regulations animation is subject to today despite the financial hardships of this time. again and again you hear " you can't do this or that and have a hit ..." focus groups that screen black and white animatics? - please. my response to those that would partake in anything of this nature is that you can do ANYTHING in animation if you have the minerals to tie yourself to the mast like Windsor McCay did. this is a medium that knows no bounds, no limitations. it came about to make your most incredible and impossible dream or worst nightmare a reality. guys that said "you can't" are the very reason themselves that regular men motivated and PROVED "you can" - they invented animation to SPITE those that didn't have the capacity to visualize it's pure potential. true especially in todays explosive cable/indie film market given what desktop publishing has to offer in your home on your own computer which you sit flat in front of scanning this very line of text in lieu of making an attempt at visual expression or abstraction. there is so very much work to be done in very good animation. if you are a producer a writer, a PA, hell even if you're a critic, why not learn to do something that you will love as much as you loved the magic of cartoons when you were younger at heart? if you think that you can find a legitimate reason to stay uninvolved in the process i'll idly repeat for your consideration this one point i wish to make. the only reason to animate something is because you can't film it any other way - because it's so absolutely impossible to fathom you need to control light and sound and time to share your story. it's how every single special effect has ever been truly bought and sold from the time of illuminated manuscripts, through the silent era, into the brain frying futuristic visions of this day. elect to suspend your disbelief. ignore the bad line of dialog for the sake of the younger audience. sing along at the end. don't be embarrassed to show your dewey eyed affection for a juvenile moment, be big enough to own it and screw what the other animation "experts" think. those that can't do teach and those that can't teach are DOING! so many experts in animation and cartoons that are sooo full of hate or indifference. animation is very hard work done in no time for less and less money, ESPECIALLY today, but the reward which is the product itself can be SO WORTH it if you don't have to endure the pathetic ney saying attitude of a few superfluous moneymen and women that couldn't name their favorite song movie or bedtime story in public for fear of shame and ridicule. do your thing, i want to see it! if you don't have a thing go get one now and stop blood sucking you phantom half stepping parasitic disease - you'll feel better if you're doing something than if you're the person that tells people why they can't do the thing they dream of most. they're probably going to do it anyway just to prove how blind deaf and dumb you might just be

this is Bob Winquist. he was the head of CIA Character Animation and the color and design teacher there during the time i attended. the man had a spark, a twinkle in his eye (the corner of his glasses), spirit, minerals, guts, balls, je ne se qua, "it" and he encouraged you to go out and get some of your very own. he made you believe you can do anything and it'd turn out alright regardless of how high the stakes were. trust was his from the get-go... one of a kind. his 2 fav words were "marvelous" and "wonderful" and he never wore them out truly regardless of the fact that he said both of them at least 4-5 times a minute if he was teaching. "this is all an experiment we're going through here"... eat the guacamole kids!

while i have been messing with and enjoying photoshop lately i have to admit that i've found myself to be one of those people who just can't let go of the old ways i'm so familiar with in painting. with oil, acrylic, and gouache there are opportunities that can't be offered in digital format - yet??? to say that one medium is or isn't equal to another is splitting hairs ...yes "splitting hairs" is a painter's joke

Last night i saw an amazing series of Glenn Barr's New Work, if you get a chance to see it in person your eyes will thank you for the trouble you went through to get there. at the preview i had the chance to ask the gallery owner about one of my paintings which recently sold at La Luz de Jesus. apparently the girls who bought the painting used a fake credit card number to make the buy and the gallery had to eat the cost after paying me out for the sale. if anyone has any information regarding this particular image's location the gallery would love to know about it, as would i. thanks
